Project Objectives

The principal concern of the Leipziger Notenspur (Leipzig Music Trail) project is the anchoring of the authentic sites of Leipzig composers' lives and work, as well as their output and accomplishments, in the public consciousness. It is a tangible acknowledgment on the part of the city of Leipzig of its distinctive musical wealth.

A particular hallmark of the Notenspur is the intention of making the Leipzig "flagship", music, beneficial to other focal points of development in the city, by means of its integration with other projects.

As a result of this cooperation, the Notenspur no longer remains a purely musical-historical venture; it now encompasses architectural, urban planning, touristic, monumental, creative, media, economic political and even family political, pedagogic and environmental aspects.

The following objectives are central to the Leipziger Notenspur-Initiative (Leipzig Music Trail Initiative):

• The making visible of Leipzig's exceptional musical tradition in the city's day-to-day life (highlighted guide system linking the authentic memorial sites).
• Experience-orientated exploration of over 300 years of musical history (complimentary Musical Experience Guide (Musikerlebnis-Leitsystem)).
• Exploration of cultural roots and values for all age-groups (family friendly design and structure).
• Illustration of the biographical and compositional parallells and disparity between composers of different epochs
• Development into both a magnet for Leipzig's guests and an identification feature for the citizens of Leipzig.
• Implementation of an internationally recognisable umbrella brand for Leipzig, the City of Music.
• Development of a platform for Leipzig's rich and spirited musical life, from the Gewandhausorchester (Gewandhaus Orchestra) and Thomanerchor (St. Thomas's Boys Choir) to the ensembles of the independent scene.
• Attraction of new tourist groups to Leipzig and the increase in length of the average stay in the city.
• Support of Leipzig's application for the admittance of its authentic composer sites, as made manifest by the Leipziger Notenspur, to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.
